MESSAGE TO THE SIGNWRITING EMAIL LISTSUBJECT: "SignWriting Literacy Project"
Recently the DAC received a small grant from a private foundation to fund the "SignWriting Literacy Project". The purpose of the project is to test SignWriting and its uses in teaching literacy to Deaf children. The goal is to slowly build a library of documentation from teachers, schools and participants.
At this time, the project is only available in American Sign Language (ASL). We may be able to develop it for other signed languages later. Right now, the project is for schools, teachers and parents in the USA and Canada.
How does the project work?
It is free for all participants and teachers. The DAC will donate the SignWriting materials, especially the SignWriting Children's Stories Series and videotapes, to teachers, parents of Deaf children and students. In return, we request documented feedback. We will need an "email report" on how the students responded, what teaching methods were used, and opinions on whether SignWriting has value in Deaf education. All email reports will be posted to the SignWriting Email List, and also on our web site.We are hoping to start a "Teacher's Forum" on our web site in 1998. The documented feedback will also be posted there, to give assistance to other teachers.
If you are interested in participating in this program, please write to me and I will be happy to provide you with more details.
Many good wishes -Valerie :-)
